Small living rooms shouldn’t have to be boring. In fact, they have their own charm the larger living rooms don’t have. You can make your small living room looks stunning by letting the natural lights in, as well as choosing and arranging the right furniture. Here are some tips:
1) Visually light furniture is perfect for your small living room
Aside from the actual size, put the visual weight of furniture into consideration. Furniture with light color and with legs will look lighter than dark carved chairs or bulky, upholstered sofas.
Chairs with legs are perfect for a small living area, as they don’t obstruct views of the floor. Space looks more open and wide. Add a metal or glass coffee table, as they consume quite little visual space.
2) Neutral colors rock!
It may sounds a little bit cliche, but painting the wall in a small living room in a neutral tone will visually push back the walls, make the room looks bigger. Your eyes can wander freely through a room in light or pastel nuance, thus the space feels wider.
3) Make the room’s vertical more eye-catching
Aside from its horizontal dimensions, a room also has a vertical ones. You can invite eyes to move above eye level to make the room feels wider and bigger. Add a floor-to-ceiling draperies, for instance, or a vertically-long painting or wall decoration.
4) Use small furniture
Choose scale-appropriate furniture for the small living room. You don’t need an L-shaped sofa. A small sofa with pillows as decoration is perfect for your small space. You can also consider an armless chair and small coffee table as they don’t make room looks crowded. However, if you insist on arm chairs, be sure the size is appropriate.
5) Let the lights in
You can use all available lights to enlarge the small living room. Pale or pastel color will increase room’s brightness by reflecting light. Use the windows as a source of natural lights during the day. Avoid blocking them with heavy layers of curtains.
6) Add a window-seat
A window seat is perfect for a small living room furniture, as it turns the window into a mini living space. Slender furniture with legs will take less visual space. As you can see under and through this furniture, your eyes will be fooled and see the living room much bigger.
7) Use an ottoman as coffee table
Large, tufted leather ottoman can be “transformed” into coffee table. It provides flat surface to place a tray, drink glasses or flowers in a vase. Ottomans will embellish your tiny living room and make it looks cool.
Even small living rooms need accessories. A mirror is always a perfect solution for room size problems. It can make your small living room looks big. Choose any style to match your overall theme. You can also add bookshelves filled with books, and some decorative pillows to add color to your light-painted walls.
