You might have been dreaming of a backyard paradise with a swimming pool in the middle, but designing a fabulous swimming pool is easier to say than done. You have the ideas in your head and money in your pocket, but what is the first step? Should you call a designer?
Don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Before calling any designer, you need to have a clear idea in your mind about what you want to do with the pool. Will it be a center of relaxation in your house, a family barbecue venue, or a place to entertain colleagues? Will it be in the middle of a lush tropical garden? Once you have the main purpose in mind, then you can take these easy first steps:
1) Decide the main theme
There are many themes you can choose for your swimming pool, ranging from Tuscan-style retreat to a tropical retreat swimming pond. Will you need a marble water fountain? Or maybe you’ll prefer a small, natural-looking waterfall streaming down a tiny jungle? You decide.
2) Choose the pool’s shape
Again, there are a large variety of pool shapes for you to choose, but let’s make it easier for you. Generally, there are nine basic shapes of swimming pools: custom shape (of your desire and budget), Grecian (a diamond-like), oval (with various wide and length), round (a sophisticated one), Roman (similar to the oval one but with edges at two or four sides), L-shaped, lazy L-shaped (L-shapes with a twist), kidney, and figure 8 (like putting two round pools as one).
3) Select pool’s aesthetic enhancements
What would you like to add to enhance the swimming pool’s look? You can choose one or some natural-looking waterfalls or some fountain bubblers to characterize your pool. Waterfalls can be used in all-natural swimming pool, along with some flowers and plants to turn your tropical garden dream into reality. But if you like, you can also add a “modern waterfall” to your minimalist swimming pool.
For your barbecue purpose, consider adding a small outdoor kitchen, a fireplace, or a poolside fire pit. To add some romance, an attached hot tub will be a perfect choice. You can also add laminar or deck jets to delight your kids while swimming or even a waterslide!
To enhance the look, a set of colored light will make your swimming pool look perfect. If you want a touch of luxury, try a resort-style vanishing edge. You can add the cabanas or an outdoor seating around the pool later.
4) Select the decking for the pool
The decking plays a big part in giving the pool certain character. Poured concrete implies modernity and sophistication, while decorative concrete can be a sparkling statement of the owner’s artsy imagination. For a natural look, consider using natural stones, pebbles or whole. Pavers will create a classic, timeless look.
5) Choose the technology you want to use
Would you like your pool to be hot or cold? There are choices of technology available to be added. Use a water heater to make your pool a hot, home spa. Consider an energy-saving device to control the usage of electricity. You can also use an automation system or salt generator for easier operation and maintenance.
