There are dozens of home and family activities, ranged from cooking, cleaning, eating and drinking, gathering, working on projects, take place in the kitchen. That makes the kitchen the most important room in the house. That’s why, aside from being beautiful and gorgeous, they also need to be functional. Moreover, if you have a small kitchen.
When designing layouts for small kitchen, the most important things are organization and ease of movement. No matter what your small kitchen design style — industrial, shabby chic, Scandinavian — here are homeowners’ mistakes you need to avoid in creating a small kitchen design layout.
1) Obstructing the Kitchen Triangle
When designing your kitchen layout, keep in mind that kitchen triangle is an essential part of any kitchen, smaller ones or their bigger counterparts. Design experts refer to the sink, stove and refrigerator as the kitchen triangle, the area of the main kitchen activities that requires careful planning and ease of access. The three kitchen areas must be close to each other and unobstructed, or your kitchen activities would be less effective and even tiring.
2) Ineffective Storage Space
The next big mistake when creating a small kitchen design layout is wasting storage spaces. To avoid that mistake, consider extra-long upper cabinets with molding for your small kitchen to create extra storage space. You can add some greeneries and lighting along the molding to make it looks beautiful. It’s highly recommended to install cabinets over the refrigerator to maximize the storage space. And you can also install some shelves across the backs of the lower kitchen cabinet, and inside the cabinets’ doors.
3) Inadequate Counter Space
Even in a small kitchen, an adequate counter space is very important. The lack of counter space will make kitchen activities ineffective and hard to do, not to mention the appliances that are permanently located there.
4) Poor Lighting
Homeowners can be super excited when designing the layout and design of their small kitchens, and forget about lighting. In fact, decent lighting is very important part of the kitchen, as it associated with safety issue besides the matter of design and atmosphere.
5) Forgetting the Backsplash
Another important part of the kitchen, the backsplash, is often forgotten when budgeting or designing a new kitchen or remodel. Even for a small kitchen, backsplash is absolutely needed. In the process of designing and layout your charming small kitchen, think about all the steam, sauce and grease in the kitchen that will ruin it. When designing a kitchen backsplash, consider using tile, metal or plastic than paint or wallpaper as they’re easier to clean and maintain.
